Carmen holds three academic degrees in mainstream science with a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) from the Arizona School of Health Sciences, a Division of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Spanning over half a century he has served the deaf, deaf-blind, hard of hearing and underprivileged. He’s been an award-winning author with over 50 publications within and outside the hearing industry including feature articles, cover stories, chapters, books and peer-reviewed scientific papers. His work has appeared in top medical periodicals such as the American Journal of Otology; in the long-running eminent magazine The Saturday Evening Post; and op-ed pieces in industry publications and on CBS 60 Minutes. Richard has been a consultant to state and federal governments, participated in think-tank forums and served on eight national boards as editorial consultant and/or adviser including the acclaimed Better Hearing Institute.

Before founding his book publishing company in 1997, he authored books with Little, Brown & Company; Prentice-Hall; G.K. Hall; and Rodale Press. Through his publishing endeavors and research, he teamed up with over a hundred scholars from around the world with scientists from such renowned U.S. institutions as Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Children’s Hospital, Mayo Clinic and NIH. His most successful book (in all editions) topped a million copies distributed within the hearing industry. Through Guidepoint Global, LLC, he has consulted with Fortune 500 companies on mergers and acquisitions.

By the end of 1984, he was audiologic team leader in a collaborative study with otolaryngologists pioneering a new methodology for diagnosing diabetes by means of an audiometric configuration. He and a colleague headed up a separate scientific team while he directed audiology research at the VA Hospital, Sepulveda, California. They discovered that relaxation procedures for tinnitus sufferers held promise as effective treatment.

About The Publishing Company

Dr. Carmen launched Auricle Ink Publishers in 1997. The mission of the publishing house was to attract top scholars from around the world skilled in a variety of auditory disorders. Auricle Ink Publishers has teamed up with over a hundred scholars from around the globe with scientists from such renowned U.S. institutions as Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Children’s Hospital, Mayo Clinic and NIH. Critical to attracting these scholars was the fundamental need that they could bring their knowledge to consumers in language readers would understand. Second, we wanted to get our books to consumers at fair market prices. Having been able to meet these two basic goals, our audience broadened from lay readers and patients of hearing healthcare practitioners to clinics, hospitals, colleges and universities adopting our books for their programs to educate not only their patients, but medical staff too. As a result, we’re proud to say that through the dedication and commitment of our audiologists, scientists, physicians, surgeons, editors, hearing aid manufacturers, advisers and experts in the field, we’ve sold more than a million books within the hearing industry alone.
